Biography
Angela Edwards is a contemporary painter who graduated in 2014 with a first class (hons) degree in fine art painting and now work from her studio @Town Quay Studios.
Working in oil on canvas and charcoal on Fabriano paper her work is held in collections internationally.
Angela is a contemporary artist whose practice centres on painting, while drawing forms an essential and parallel strand. Her work examines the instability of the image in the digital age, with particular attention to portraiture and the shifting nature of presence. Within a culture saturated by mass media and algorithmically generated imagery, she considers how identity is constructed, mediated and consumed. In an era increasingly shaped by AI, the direct trace of the artist’s hand becomes both a material and ethical assertion of authenticity.
While oil painting remains at the forefront of her practice, drawing particularly in pencil and charcoal offers a more immediate and intimate encounter with the subject. Through subtle tonal shifts and areas of soft focus, Edwards echoes the way digital images blur and dissolve, yet the sustained labour of mark-making restores psychological weight and duration. The specificity of likeness is balanced with an interest in atmosphere, capturing not only appearance but presence.
Across both painting and drawing, she translates fleeting, screen-based imagery into the enduring languages of oil and graphite. In doing so, she resists the speed and disposability of contemporary image culture, reclaiming contemplation and stillness.
A recurring thread throughout her work is the idea of home whether as domestic space, emotional state, or the broader condition of displacement. This concern informs her sensitivity to gesture, expression and the quiet complexities of belonging.
Edwards’ practice continues to evolve in dialogue with contemporary visual culture, while remaining grounded in the physical intelligence of paint and line.
