Monthly:January 2017

Step one of a new series based on images of people leaving Aleppo.Outline sketch on an A1 wooden panel.

New painting, shown in stages

I thought it would be good to capture my painting process in a series of stages. The painting process is really only half of my practice as the compositional work and subject matter is worked out before in a process that has gradually revealed itself over the course of the last few years.. I will write more about this process later in the year.

More background to throw the figures out

More of the background filled in. I always try to work from dark to light but sometimes I just need some light…

Just an indication of the person. It always amazes me how little it takes for us to identify a human form…
Not quite finished yet, but coming together

New year, new work 2017

It’s great to get back into the studio. Having several panels ready to go means that I can work on two or three pieces at the same time. This helps me to stay fresh, as soon as things are stalling on one painting I can move to another. Strange business painting!

Late last year I decided to try a little Lino cut. A little clumsy, but there is something about the printed mark however it is made that I just love.
